Whether you are a novice, experienced, making a living or just thinking about entering the fantasy world of cosplay, dive into the award-winning documentary “Cosplay Dreams 3D.” A one night showing only, Platt College is hosting a large cosplay on Aug. 21, with a Red Carpet & Pop Culture Art Show, and Q&A and Cosplay Contest. Cosplay celebs, and prizes offer an experience for the cosplayer, and those who want to play.

Platt collaborated with Passage Productions, and with two Platt alumni working on the film, was happy to host its San Diego premiere.

Alumna Vanessa Robbins, video editor, from Rancho San Diego went through everyone’s stories, finding which material to use that would share the idea of cosplay, and tells its stories on several levels.

“What I looked for is what would connect them to the movie,” she said. “We show the professional side, to the people that are very passionate, to someone who is brand new and just starting out. What they go through, their struggles and challenges.”

Robbins said she was not a cosplayer prior to working on this film, but inspired by it, last year created her own outfit last year at the Comic-Con premiere of the movie as Laura Croft.

“I gained a better appreciation of what they do,” she said. “It was exciting for the premiere in Los Angeles, to see all the people that turned out and we got really good responses so it makes us feel proud of what we are doing.”

Alumni Joel Morillo, lead visual effects, from La Mesa worked with the footage, utilizing the array of outfits and added visual effects to enhance the costumes and the characters they cosplayed.

Morillo is a long-term cosplayer and costumes up as a steampunk demon hunter, sort of a generic character that he made up. A comic book kid, the Comic-Con proved to be a stomping ground for him and his wife.

“I graduated three months prior to the release and to be three months out of college and see your work on a big screen was kind of crazy, a little surreal,” he said.

Robbins said she loves the concept of cosplay, the way people dress up and the fun that surrounds it, but what surprised her the most in working on this project is the type of people that cosplay.

“They’re all passionate about the same thing and they are all extremely different kind of people,” she said. “You don’t have to be a ‘geek’ or a ‘nerd’ and you don’t have to know about everything to like it, dress up and go to it.”

“Cosplay Dreams 3D” won best documentary at the 2014 Los Angeles 3D Film Festival.
