For more than 50 years, the Lemon Grove Lions Club has quietly but powerfully made a difference in the lives of local residents. From stuffing backpacks for schoolchildren to organizing fundraisers that support youth programs, public safety, and families in need, the Lions’ motto — “We serve” — is more than just words.
In October, the club’s efforts were formally recognized by the Lemon Grove School District for their role in collecting and distributing school supplies to students. It’s a project close to the heart of club president Ken Burke, who has led the organization for the past three years.
“Helping our youth is helping our future,” Burke said. “We’re always ready to lend a hand — whether it’s on-the-spot assistance, behind-the-scenes work, or supporting a worthy cause.”
The Lemon Grove Lions Club is part of Lions Clubs International and boasts 19 active volunteers. Though small in number, the group’s impact is anything but modest. They are one of nearly 50 clubs in District 4‑L6, which spans San Diego and Imperial counties.
“We may not be a big city group, but every one of our members shows up and participates,” Burke said. “It’s about heart, not numbers.”
The Lions support a range of programs, including Crime Stoppers and Little League, while keeping a strong focus on local partnerships and events.
Fundraisers are a key part of the work, from summer car shows to chili cook-offs and food booths at community gatherings.
“We raise funds so we can give money away,” Burke said. “The goal is always to support organizations that help people.”
One of the club’s signature outreach efforts is vision screenings for children, done in collaboration with nearby Lions chapters. “We did one in Spring Valley where kids could get free eye exams and leave with glasses,” Burke said.
“That’s what service looks like.”
Looking ahead, the Lions will join the city’s annual Lemon Grove Bonfire in early December, selling hot dogs and nachos to raise funds for local causes.
The club meets on the second Wednesday of each month at 6 p.m. and welcomes new members.
“You don’t need a lot of time or money,” Burke said. “Just a heart for service and a willingness to help your neighbors.”
