Women’s group marks more than a century of community service

The La Mesa Woman’s Club has officially launched its 125th anniversary celebration year, marking more than a century of civic service, women’s leadership, and community involvement in La Mesa.

The anniversary year began May 19, with a kickoff event at El Torito in La Mesa, launching a year-long series of programs leading up to a grand 125th anniversary celebration planned for 2027.

Founded in 1902 by 11 women meeting in Mary Ferguson’s home, the organization has remained focused on community service and civic engagement for more than a century.

Club President Kathy Tinsley said, “Reaching the 125th anniversary is both a celebration and a reflection of the extraordinary legacy built by generations of women dedicated to serving the La Mesa community.”

Tinsley said that the milestone represents far more than longevity.

“For our members, this milestone represents more than longevity — it honors the countless volunteer hours, charitable efforts, scholarships, civic contributions, and friendships that have shaped our organization and our city for more than a century. It is also an opportunity to look ahead and ensure the Club’s mission continues to inspire future generations.

The club’s mission has remained consistent while evolving with the needs of the community.

“So, while the world has changed since 1902, the heart of our mission has remained constant, bringing women together to strengthen the community through service and shared purpose,” Tinsley said. “The Club continues to focus on philanthropy and volunteerism to support education, literacy, health, and children, as well as other needs.”

She also highlighted the organization’s long-standing role in the city’s development.

“The Club has played an important role in La Mesa’s civic and cultural history. One of our earliest contributions was helping establish the city’s first public library,” she said.

“Throughout the decades, members have supported wartime relief efforts, educational initiatives, scholarships for local students, healthcare causes, and numerous charitable organizations throughout San Diego County.”

The anniversary year will include a series of community events and service projects.

“The anniversary celebration will include a full year of programs, volunteer initiatives, and community events designed to honor our history while giving back in meaningful ways,” Tinsley said.

“Planned activities include expanded community service projects, scholarship and literacy initiatives, holiday giving programs for local families, and monthly activities supporting education, health, and civic engagement.”

Look for big things to happen during the milestone, she said.

“The celebration will culminate in a major 125th Anniversary Celebration event in May 2027 that brings together members, community partners, local leaders, and residents to celebrate the Club’s lasting impact on La Mesa and San Diego County.”

Looking ahead, Tinsley said the organization continues to focus on growth and inclusion.

“We strive to create a welcoming and flexible environment where members can participate in ways that fit their interests and schedules,” she said. “We also embrace modern communication, community partnerships, and inclusive programming to ensure women of all ages feel connected, valued, and empowered to contribute.”

She added that the organization’s legacy is ongoing.

“Our legacy is not simply about preserving history — it is about continuing a tradition of women stepping forward to serve others, strengthen the community, and create positive change.”

The La Mesa Woman’s Club anniversary year will continue through 2026 and culminate in the 2027 celebration event.
