“Hand written essays” said third grade teacher Nicole Marshall, with Lemon Grove School District’s Vista La Mesa Academy describing essays submitted at the 27th Annual Treganza Third Grade History Essay Awards ceremony on June 6 at a Lemon Grove City Council meeting. The 27-year-old competition was launched by the late Dr. Amorita Treganza in 1990.

The 27-year-old competition was launched by the late Dr. Amorita Treganza in 1990.
Lemon Grove Historical Society member Helen O’Field, introduced Lemon Grove’s history to the children. Pupils focused on Lemon Grove’s history from before the 1900’s to present. O’Field used washboards, an old toaster, a hoop game, a blacksmith’s apron, and other historical pieces and references to bring Lemon Grove’s history to life for the third graders before they started their essays.
Genesis Salonga, father of second place winner Genesis Salonga, 8, said, “He (his son) kept telling us what it was about. Telling us facts and tidbits of history” during the student’s research time. “He researched online and used books at the school’s library.”
First place winner, Jenny Tam, 9, described parts of her paper with “It started about Indians (Kumeyaay) and how they lived and the settlers who took their land. Robert Allison came and bought the land.”
Christopher Staples earned third place and Maya Patterson was earned an honorable mention. Lemon Grove’s Mayor Racquel Vasquez presented students with a framed certificate and goodie bag.Vasquez told the students, “You are the future leaders. To the parents who support our children – Thank you.”
