Just in time for Valentine’s Day, Sophie’s Gallery is celebrating the season with its “Gotta’ Have Heart: Pen Pals” art show at is Downtown El Cajon gallery with a public reception on Feb. 7 from 5-7 p.m. and will continue to run through March 31.
This year marks the 25th anniversary of Sophie’s Gallery, celebrating a legacy of art projects and hundreds of regional, national, and international art shows. Sophie’s Gallery is a creative space for artists with intellectual & developmental disabilities to express themselves. Run by St. Madeleine Sophie’s Center, the art program gives students a chance to create and learn a variety of art media, such as printmaking, jewelry design, mosaics, painting, fabric arts, and more.
“We are thrilled to present another year of Gotta Have Heart and showcasing the unique pieces our artists have created. We are also proud to celebrate the 25th anniversary of the gallery, which has come so far since starting as a small art class in the 1970s. Today, we have a full program taught by professional artists, and an entire gallery/space for our artists to thrive. This year’s shows will be even more special as we celebrate this landmark,” said St. Madeleine Sophie’s Center CEO Debra Emerson.
All artwork sales directly support Sophie’s Gallery and its artists, with 40% going directly to the artists and 60% to the gallery for supplies and overhead for the art program.
