The 2017 El Capitan High School Vaqueros football team held with annual tradition on Aug. 2, as they proudly ran down Maine Avenue in historic Downtown Lakeside for the 13th year in a row. The run has evolved into a highly anticipated local event marking the beginning of the football season. Several hundred people were in attendance.

Cheerleaders, students, parents, and regular Lakesiders’ lined the town’s main drag and roared with enthusiasm as the Vaqueros jogged from Mapleview Street escorted by a San Diego County Sheriff’s Department black and white. The team followed their flag-bearing leaders to Parkside Street, then made a U-turn and headed back.

The smiles and cheers and enthusiasm of the crowd were reminiscent of small town America. That warm feeling is what draws so many to this town, with its sense of old fashioned values and enjoyment of some of the simpler (yet just as important) things in life. It’s like taking a momentary step back into time.

We wish the best of luck to the members of the Vaqueros football team!
