El Cajon program aims for clean sweep in February

Starting in February, the city of El Cajon will launch a six-month pilot program designed to improve street sweeping in selected residential and commercial areas. The program is aimed at reducing stormwater pollution by clearing trash and debris that often remain when vehicles are parked at the curb.

“The pilot program aims to enhance our street sweeping efforts to create cleaner, safer streets while safeguarding our waterways,” said Public Works Director David Richards.

The initiative includes enhanced public outreach and the installation of new “No Parking during Street Sweeping” signs to establish temporary parking restrictions during scheduled sweeping hours. Residents and businesses in the pilot areas will be notified through door hangers, windshield notices, temporary entrance signage, permanent no-parking signs showing sweeping schedules, and updates on the city’s website and social media platforms.

Richards emphasized the importance of communication for the program’s success. “The success of this program hinges on our ability to effectively inform businesses and residents in the pilot areas,” he said. “To ensure broad awareness, we are engaging media partners, using social media, installing new signage, deploying temporary message boards, placing notices on vehicles, and distributing door hangers.”

Temporary no-parking restrictions will take place at the following locations:
• Fesler Street (between Johnson and Pioneer): Wednesdays, 4–7 a.m.
• Decker Street (between Anza and 1st): North side, 3rd Monday monthly; South side, 4th Monday monthly, 7–10 a.m.
• East Madison Avenue (between 4th and Verdin Street): 3rd Monday monthly, 7–10 a.m.
•East Main Street (between 3rd Street and Broadway): North side Mondays; South side Thursdays, 4–7 a.m.

Parking enforcement, including $42.50 citations and towing, when necessary, will begin after the first scheduled sweep.

City officials say the pilot will help keep streets cleaner, improve drainage, enhance safety for pedestrians and cyclists, and reduce pollutants entering local waterways.

The city of El Cajon will continue to prioritize clean streets, safe neighborhoods, and responsible management of public infrastructure as part of its ongoing community services.
