Patrons of El Cajon’s Blarney Stone Bar are spreading the “blarney” while awaiting Dirk the Leprechaun to make his holiday appearance this weekend at the establishment.

Dirk is described by customer Toby Smith as “a short man who dresses up as a leprechaun on St. Patrick’s Day, which this year falls on Sunday, March 17.”

When you ask Smith or customer Val Palkowski how tall Dirk the Leprechaun is (his real name is Dirk Wallace), they indicate his height by placing their hand at stomach level. Depending on the size of the person describing this, Dirk’s height can change from being a very short leprechaun to a taller one.

What has been confirmed in the folklore and blarney world of this legendary character is that in previous years Dirk dressed up in a “little green suit” as Smith reported. Patrons also concur that the self-proclaimed leprechaun has bragged that “every woman is after him.”
According to patrons, Dirk the Leprechaun cracks jokes, is around 63 to 64 years old, is a lifetime member of the Elk’s Club and chases every woman in the bar when he comes in. Again, these are rumors mind you.

As is fitting of anyone who uses natural talents, Dirk celebrates other holidays in this manner. He has been known to dress up as a New Year’s baby on New Year’s Eve, and as cupid with a bow and arrow on Valentine’s Day. He’s a true inspiration for using one’s physical gifts if ever there was one.

It is undetermined what the leprechaun will eat and drink on St. Patrick’s Day. Perhaps he’ll knock back a Four Lokos Lemonade, or even bring his own green popcorn.

In addition to Dirk’s visit, holiday festivities have previously included bands like  Bedpost Buzzards, but maybe the pub will just play the  mandatory Irish jig, or merely bring out the Celtic music CD's.
Dirk has been said to consider bartender Paige his “pot o’ gold.” Rumor has it that he may end up being hog-tied to the pool table by her.

Palkowski also stated that Dirk usually will have his dance card lined up in advance, and may even visit other fine drinking establishments on St. Paddy’s Day.

Patrons can take advantage of the great photo opportunities of this popular leprechaun will provide.
Anticipation is brewing for those waiting for this little green leprechaun to show up this year at the Blarney Stone. It is sort of like waiting for a unicorn to show up — unique.

He may even have some real Irish blood in his DNA, or at least plenty of Boyle’s Irish Scream Hot Sauce in his veins. St. Patrick’s day is expected to bring good luck to all, including Dirk. For information, visit www.blarneystoneec.kk5.org.
