The last time the West Hills High School football team was 4-0 was in 2021. It took an overtime touchdown run to the left pylon by junior Evan Dorris to get the Wolf Pack back there five years later following last Friday’s 27-20 win at Hilltop.
West Hills is one of four East County teams — three in the Grossmont Conference — that remains undefeated this deep into the early part of the 2026 high school season.
Each win has had its own defining moment either defensively, offensively or on special teams.
West Hills head coach Casey Ash called last Friday’s non-league victiry “a very sloppy game.”
“We managed to overcome two turnovers and numerous penalties,” he said. “The schedule is about to get much more difficult.”
The Wolf Pack hosts the Grossmont Foothillers (3-1) on Sept. 25 following a bye week.
West Hills then kicks off Grossmont Valley League play the following week on Oct. 2 against El Cajon Valley.
The Braves picked up their first win of the season last Friday, 42-0, over Orange Glen.
Senior quarterback Evin Dill completed 10 of 17 passing attempts for 111 yards with one touchdown and one interception to direct the latest Wolf Pack win. He also rushed 14 times for 88 yards and scored once.
Senior Zach Waters had one catch for 19 yards — a touchdown — while Dorris had seven carries for 26 yards and one rushing touchdown, including the game-winner.
Sophomore Brady Koerner finished the game with nine kicking points — two field goals and three extra-point conversions.
West Hills collected 387 yards in total offense.
Junior Marcus Leath led ground-gainers with 136 yards on seven carries, averaging 19.4 yards per carry. Leath led the team with 158 all-purpose yards while tacking on two catches for 22 yards.
Junior Rene Varlea Ugalde had two catches for 37 yards. Junior Chuck Rosolino had three catches for 19 yards while junior Evan Garrett had one catch for 10 yards.
The teams battled to a 7-7 first quarter standoff before the Wolf Pack took a 10-7 halftime lead. The host Lancers out-dueled their East County visitors 13-7 in the third quarter to slip in front 20-17.
Senior Octavio Bonilla opened scoring on a quarterback keeper to push Hilltop to an early 7-0 lead. The Wolf Pack countered on the 19-yard scoring pass from Dill to Waters and added a 44-yardfield goal to hold a three-point halftime lead.
Hilltop launched an 80-yard touchdown pass from Bonilla to seuor Lajuan Johnson to go in front by three points. West Hills promptly countered on a one-yard TD run by Dill to flip the score to 17-13 in favor of the Wolf Pack.
Junior Max Vaquero pushed the Lancers back on front on an 18-yard scoring run.
Koerner scored the only points in the fourth quarter on a 27-yard field goal. He missed from 32 yards out for the potential game-winner late in the game.
Dorris scored on West Hills’ opening possession in overtime while the Wolf Pack held Hilltop scoreless on its series despite the Lancers moving the ball to the five-yard line.
Senior Scott Miller keyed West Hills with 10 tackles, including two sacks, while junior Enzo Magnarelli logged nine defensive stops. The Wolf Pack set Hilltop back with four sacks overall as Waters and senior Seth Creech each added one sack.
The Wolf Pack defense came through with seven tackles for losses. Waters had seven tackles, including three for losses, to highlight his two-way play on the night.
Bonilla passed for 129 yards with one touchdown for Hilltop while Vaquero rushed 24 times for 62 yards with one TD.
Senior Zion Almazon led the Lancers with 12 unassisted tackles while senior Markus Sapiera had one interception.
Patriot Nation
Christian played its second consecutive game with senior Kai Rosier in the signal-caller slot in the absence of quarterback Kaleb Runkle. Rosier was once again up to the task by completing seven of nine passing attempts for 128 yards and two touchdowns while rushing six times for 44 yards and another score as the Patriots improved to 3-0 with a 27-6 non-league win at Olympian High School in Chula Vista.
Rosier logged 172 total yards — more than half the team’s 211 total yards.
Sophomore Julian Morones had nine carries for 39 yards and one touchdown while senior Quentin Uhland snared three passes for 83 yards and one touchdown and sophomore Gavin Runkle had two catches for 25 yards and one touchdown.
Morones also pitched in on defense with two sacks while senior Xander Molina led the team with 10 tackles. Junior Max Viloria logged nine tackles while senior Parker Soto contributed one sack.
The Patriots held the Eagles (1-3) to just three passing yards while coughing up 152 rushing yards and one touchdown to Olympian senior quarterback Walter Ignacio.
Christian hosts Calexico (2-2) this Friday in a bid to improve to 4-0 on the season.
Orange Nation
The new-look Norsemen continued to turn the competition on its head after pouncing on the visiting Mar Vista Mariners, 56-6, last Friday in non-league play.
The victory came on the heels of previous 75-0 and 66-0 non-league wins over San Jacinto Valley Academy and Castle Park in previous weeks.
At 3-0, VHS has out-scored the competition so far 197-6.
Senior Jayden Hunter led the Valhalla assault with 148 rushing yards and five touchdowns as the Men of Orange improved to 3-0.
The Norsemen out-gained the Mariners 388-40 yards en route to piling up eight touchdowns.
Junior Adrian Wilson completed 11 of 20 passes for 136 yards and two touchdowns — one each to junior Desmond Demara (six catches, 92 yards) and freshman A.J. Wright (three catches, 25 yards).
Sophomore Camryn Conley was another offensive contributor with seven carries for 86 yards and one touchdown.
Defensive contributors included junior Amar’e Young with six tackles, senior David Rivera with one interception and freshman Jordan Codere and seniors Adrian Rojo-Hernandez and James Shelton each with one sack.
Sophomore Jehiel Crawford scored Mar Vista’s lone touchdown in the first quarter. The Mariners (2-2) finished with 25 passing yards and 15 rushing yards.
