The Grossmont Union High School District Board of Trustees officially named Mary Beth Kastan as incoming Superintendent during an April 26 meeting.
Kastan, who has been with GUHSD for 35 years, currently works as Assistant Superintendent of Educational Services for the district.
The administrator began as a social studies teacher at Mount Miguel High School before working as an administrative intern at West Hills High School, then serving for six years as Assistant Principal followed by 13 years as Principal at Valhalla High School.
Kastan holds a Bachelor of Arts in social science from San Diego State University, where she completed her credential work, and a master’s degree in educational administration from National University.
Board President Robert Shield said Kastan is “an outstanding instructional leader who’ll provide a clear vision for our district” due to her deep GUHSD roots and experience.
“We know she has the heart and experience to serve all students, including those with disabilities, English learners, foster youth, and those experiencing homelessness, Shield said, describing Kastan as empathetic, charismatic, and a hard-working leader and team-builder.
Kastan said she is “humbled by and grateful for the trust that our incredible Board has placed in me to lead the over-3,000 caring, innovative, and collaborative members of GUHSD’s staff family” as they move into the future.
She will step into her new role when current GUHSD Superintendent Theresa Kemper officially retires on June 30.
