Voters to decide La Mesa tax question

On July 9, the La Mesa City Council unanimously voted to place the extension of the three-quarter sales tax on the ballot for the upcoming November election, that allows La Mesa residents to decide the confirmation of this sales tax which has been used to fund public services.

Originally passed as Proposition L in 2008, it is set to expire in 2029. This sales tax contributes approximately $12 million annually in local funding. The cost is paid by both residents and visitors who shop in La Mesa, and it adds just 7.5¢ to a $10 purchase or 75¢ to a $100 purchase.

The City Manager’s Office stated that without this funding, the city will need to make significant reductions to safety services, and maintenance of streets, sidewalks, parks, storm drains, and other city infrastructure.

If renewed, this local funding will continue to:
• Maintain over 153 miles of streets and 53 miles of storm drains.
• Keep 133 acres of parks, recreation, and community facilities safe, clean and well-maintained.
• Repair aging infrastructure including storm drains, pipes, sidewalks, and public facilities.
• Provide fire protection, paramedic services, and quick responses to 911 emergencies.
• Provide police services, including crime prevention and investigations.
