“The Star Wars films have always been a favorite of mine since childhood so it was fun to make a piece for such an exhibit. One of my favorite things was using a color splash technique to make certain features like her hair and tattoos pop,” said Englehardt of her “Princess Leah” piece.
She said art has served as a visual journal of her life events.
“Art has always been a great form of self expression and a way of showing my current mood,” she said. “Looking back on older art pieces, I can recall what I was going through at that point in my life.”
Platt College Dean of Education Marketa Hancova, said this is one of the primary reasons the school hosts art shows off campus.
“Platt College offers a rigorous academic and artistic curriculum in the classroom, but we believe that learning and inspiration happens as much outside of the campus as in the classroom. One of the opportunities for the students is to create excellent pieces that may have a chance to be shared publically with San Diego,” she said. “We encourage our students to participate in exhibitions and competitions as it pushes them toward creativity and diligence to get the best out of them. Consequently, they experience either a celebration or rejection – situations that they will face as professionals. The sooner they learn how to handle it, the better professionals they will become.”
