‘Stepping Higher’ makes holidays brighter for children, families

Stepping Higher, Inc. a (501)(C)(3) non-profit organization in partnership with the Toys for Tots Program gave toys away from their office in Spring Valley to children for the holidays. They have been collecting toys for three hundred children whose families had signed up in October to be part of this gift give a way.

The woman in charge of the Toys For Tots event is Sharon Campbell, who is also the Director of Volunteer Support for Stepping Higher, Inc.

The woman in charge of the Toys For Tots event is Sharon Campbell, who is also the Director of Volunteer Support for Stepping Higher, Inc.

The volunteers picked up the toys from the Miramar Marine Base and transported them back to their office. During the evening, the volunteers packed an individual bag for each child on the list. They gave much thought to what each child would like. All week long, the dedicated group of staff and volunteers were dispensing toys from their long list of ‘very deserving families’.

Stepping Higher, Inc. has been a large presence in Spring Valley. The program is maintained by nearly 50 volunteers during the week. What it is most renowned for is its food give a way service on Thursday afternoons.

They feed approximately 1,400 families within a month. Without the help of all of their volunteers, this program could not exist. It was founded by Dr. William A. Benson in 2003. Stepping Higher, Inc. was developed to be an asset to the community at large, and a dedicated resource to those in need. The Executive Director overseeing all operations is Dr. Rachelle Y. Benson. Other significant personnel include, Carole Rainey, Director of Development;, Masheila Taylor, Director of Program Services; Latrice Lee, Program Assistant -Employment Services and Rachel Rainey, Administrative Assistant.

Besides the Thursday food distribution, Stepping Higher Inc. offers several additional programs including Nutritional Programs, Counseling Services, Housing Services, Alcohol and Drug Treatment, rental assistance, employment assistance, and youth services.

Stepping Higher Inc. sponsored the Toys for Tots Program, and did a great job ensuring that 300 children and their families were provided with Christmas presents, food and some great holiday cheer making for a very merry Christmas for all.
