Spring Valley’s Anna Davis takes top honor at Pala Mesa junior golf event

Spring Valley’s Anna Davis shot a course record 64 in the first round of play at the Toyota Tour Cup stop at the Pala Mesa Resort Sept. 26-27 to take a commanding seven shot lead over the field. She followed that up with a solid 70 to finish at minus-10 and win by six strokes.

Davis, who attends Steele Canyon High School, finished ahead of Torrance’s Emily Lee, who secured second place with a second-round score of 67 to finish at minus-4 for the two-day tournament.

Torrance’s Kyle Chong finished third at even par.

Davis ranked fifth on the 2020 San Diego Junior Golf Association’s final girls 15-18 division leaderboard with 1,510 points.

Carlsbad’s Karen Tsuru topped the chart with 2,466 points, followed by Oceanside’s Jasmine Leovao with 2,230 points in second place, Escondido’s Libby Fleming with 2,130 points in third place and Oceanside’s Janae Leovao with 1,981 points in fourth place.

Rounding out the top 10 point-scorers were San Diego’s Taylor Riley with 1,413.83 points in sixth place, San Ysidro’s Estibaly Garcia Rubio with 1,306 points in seventh place, La Mesa’s Annika Yturralde with 1,288 points in eighth place, Chula Vista’s Melanie Reyes with 1,128 points in ninth place and San Diego’s Lynn Pham with 1,124 points in 10th place.

Davis finished runner-up to Jasmine Leovao at the SDJGA North Park Trophy and Award Fall Championship Sept 12-13 at the Las Costa Resort and Spa. Leovao shot a two-day total of 142, followed by Davis at 144. Tsuru finished third at 146 while Chong was fourth at 148.

Carlsbad’s Dylan Oyama topped the SDJGA final season boys 15-18 division leaderboard with 2,126.32 points, followed by Rancho Santa Fe’s Jaden Hunter with 1,170.5 points in second place, Chula Vista’s Jacob Paule with 1,686 points in third place, San Diego’s Tyler Kowack with 1,506.66 points in fourth place, San Diego’s Jackson Moss with 1,152 points in fifth place, San Diego’s Michael Behr with 1,057 points in sixth place, Chula Vista’s Rei Harashima with 1,031.83 points in seventh place, San Diego’s Davis Lee with 955.33 points in eighth place, Ladera Ranch’s Ryan Voois with 714 points in ninth place and Jamul’s Shea Lague with 666 points in 10 place.

At the North Park Trophy and Award Fall Championship, Kowack topped the field at minus-3, followed by Harashima in second place at minus-1.

Behr finished third at even par, followed in a three-way tie for fourth place (all at one-over) by Chula Vista’s Steven Deutsch, Oyama and Murrieta’s Jaden Huggins.

Kowack finished with rounds of 72 and 69 for a two-day total of 141 to earn 480 points while Harashima shot rounds of 72 and 71 for a 143 score to earn 400 points. Kowack shot minus-three on the final day to claim the win.

Deutsch recorded five birdies at the event. He shot minus-three on the final day to climb up the leaderboard.

The Phil Mickelson Junior Players Championship is scheduled Oct. 10-11 at the Arrowhead Golf Course in Oceanside for the ages 11-12 and 13-14, Oct. 17-18 at the Rancho Bernardo Inn for ages 15-18 and Nov. 7 at the Emerald Isle Executive Golf Course in Oceanside for ages 10-under.
