As we enter the season of renewal and growth, it’s time to celebrate the people and places that are the heart and soul of Downtown El Cajon. This community wouldn’t be the same without the local business owners, creatives, and events that bring everyone together. Let’s celebrate the leaders who keep the neighborhood thriving!
Women-Owned Businesses and Female Leaders
In honor of Women’s History Month, we’re highlighting the powerhouse female entrepreneurs, artists, and community leaders who are making a lasting impact in Downtown El Cajon.

If you’re looking for a quick bite, stop by Main Street Donut Deli, where owner Joy Romey transformed her love for diverse food into a restaurant and catering business. Together, the restaurant and catering business offer high-quality, delicious comfort food that is sure to amaze guests.
You’re at your best when you feel your best. Maria Nails & Spa is a family-owned business that has been serving El Cajon for over 10 years. Their use of high-quality products and affordable rates ensures that all guests leave feeling confident without breaking the bank.
Another local spot, Tania Beauty Studio, helps customers reach all their hair goals from coloring, cutting, and adding extensions. By offering her services in both English and Spanish, Tania helps clients feel at ease as they undergo their hair transformation.
The art scene in Downtown El Cajon is a welcoming spot that not only uplifts community members but also draws in new visitors. The East County Arts Association, led by Linda Baltodano, supports local artists by providing accessible and educational opportunities. They have an established network and community of artists that continuously support one another and give back to the community.
Sophie’s Gallery also supports the pursuit of the arts by creating a space for adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities to explore their creativity through art. Wendy Morris and Erin Perschbacher, leaders of the program, connect participants to the tools to realize their full creative potential. The Official Happy Cow Artist, Denise Rich, has made the neighborhood home to her art studio, where she creates her famed cow-themed pieces. Known for her “painterly realism” style, Denise captures the individuality and charm of each cow she paints, drawing from her own photography to bring her subjects to life.
Community and Creativity
Looking for a way to support the arts? Downtown El Cajon has no shortage of events that will fill you with community pride. The East County Arts Association is holding a month-long exhibit highlighting pieces by Shelby Marzoni. Known for her landscapes and seascapes pieces, the show will not disappoint. If time is tight and you can’t make it out this month, Sophie’s Gallery exhibition Gotta Have Heart will run through April 6 and feature a collection of scratchboard art including pieces of hand-crafted Valentines, original prints, sculptures, mosaics, and jewelry, perfect for any casual art lover.
For people looking to see a live show, Shaun Cassidy will be at The Magnolia on March 22 as part of his Road to Us tour. See this multi-platinum artist perform live in an intimate venue with no bad seat in the house!
