Working in Santee for nearly 10 years, Amy Huynh, a Vietnamese refugee came to the U.S. in 1991. She opened her family-owned business a little over a year ago, works seven days a week and has grown to four part-time employees.

Huynh, a graduate of California Hair Designs Academy, La Mesa Campus, said the Shellac (gel) nail polish’s bright colors are popular but the bright colors depend on the season. Huynh offers this type of nail product in more than 50 colors. A mirror finish, zero dry time, and no real nail damage are other benefits of the Shellac system, she said. Colors can range from faux fur, dark lava, black pool and many more.

“The fact that the nails can last 2-3weeks, Shellac nails have been gaining in popularity,” said Huynh. “You start with the natural nail and the Shellac goes on top of that.”

Customer Sherry Manning started coming to Huynh’s salon about six months ago and although she currently does not use Shellac on her nails said, “I might get talked into it.”

Tracy Nguyen, employee, said she not only has the Shellac nail look on her own nails but also does the process on her customers.

Huynh said her salon offers full service, with many trendy thing very popular with customers. Hands that reflect one accent nail in a different color and design or different colors and designs on each finger, French nail designs with a twist and glitter continue to have a strong following amongst the fake nail crowd, she said.
Ombre hair, dark roots with lighter ends, in all mixes is very hot, she said. Ombre nails with the same two tone colors and dark to light or light to dark gradations are sizzling hot.

Forever Hair & Nails salon is a full-service salon offering facials, waxing, manicures, and pedicures. Waxing customers can range in age from teenagers to the elderly with most “asking for their eyebrow arch to be fixed,” said Nguyen.

Huynh said she established the business in Santee because of the “friendliness of the residents” and said all are welcome to her salon to get Shellac-ed or ombre-ed.
