SDSU’s Lorena Bauer Named Mountain West Player of the Week

San Diego State University senior softball player Lorena Bauer has been named the Mountain West Player of the Week, the league announced March 31. It is the first weekly league accolade of the season for Bauer, a Steele Canyon High School alumna, and the fourth of her career.

It is the fourth time that an Aztec has garnered the player-of-the-week award this year and fourth in the past five weeks. SDSU has also won two pitcher-of-the-week awards, giving San Diego State six total on the season, two more than the next-highest school (Fresno State).

Bauer helped the Aztecs (23-12, 6-0 in conference play) to a weekend sweep over Boise State in Boise by going 7-for-9 (.778) with four home runs, nine RBI, a double and two walks. She posted an eye-popping 2.222 slugging percentage and a .818 on-base percentage, while recording a putout in her only chance in the outfield.

Highlighting the weekend was a 16-2 SDSU win on Saturday, where she was 4-for-4 with three homers, seven RBI and three runs scored. The three home runs and seven RBIs both broke school single-game records. Additionally, the three homers tied a MW single-game record and a MW single-game record for league contests.

Bauer began her big weekend on Friday, March 27, going 2-for-3 with a solo home run, double, two runs and a walk as San Diego State won, 6-4. On Sunday, March 29, Bauer was 1-for-2 with an RBI single, run and a walk in a 10-6 Aztec triumph.

On the season, Bauer is batting .402 (39-for-97) with 10 homers, 39 RBI, seven doubles and 14 walks in just 33 games (32 starts), while recording a .804 slugging percentage and a .482 on-base mark. She leads SDSU in six offensive categories, including triples (1, tied), home runs, RBIs, total bases (78), slugging percentage and on-base percentage.

For her career, Bauer owns six school records, including 51 home runs and 170 RBIs. She’s also first all-time at SDSU in slugging percentage, OPS percentage, extra-base hits and total bases.

Bauer and the first-place Aztecs begin a crucial stretch where they will play nine games in 11 days, starting with a weekend home series with Fresno State (23-12, 4-2 MW). The first pitch for game No. 1 is set for 6 p.m. Thursday at the SDSU Softball Stadium.
