San Diego Humane Society has received a $72,298.57 donation from its official pet licensing partner, DocuPet, a pet profile, lost pet, and licensing solution.
The contribution, generated by 20% of designer pet tag sales, will provide critical support for animals in SDHS’s care, helping fund medical treatment, behavior resources, and programs that ensure pets find safe, loving homes.
“This donation from DocuPet and our local pet owners is a lifeline for animals in our care,” said Nina Thompson, director of public relations at SDHS.
“With shelters facing a 25% increase in animals compared to last January, every dollar is vital. We are caring for nearly 90 more animals each day than at this time last year, and these funds help our staff continue providing medical care, safe shelter, and behavior resources during one of the most crowded periods we’ve ever experienced.”
Pet licensing plays a critical role in keeping animals safe and reuniting lost pets with their families. Licensed pets typically spend less time in shelters, freeing up space and resources to care for other animals in need. In January alone, SDHS averaged 229 more animals in care per day than the previous year, highlighting the importance of contributions like this one from DocuPet.
“Whether it’s a few dollars from a tag sale or a larger donation, these funds are part of the lifeline that allows our staff to continue saving lives,” Thompson said. “We are deeply grateful to DocuPet and the pet owners who chose designer tags, helping bridge the gap created by a 6% overall increase in our shelter population.”
DocuPet provides San Diego residents with an online platform to quickly register and license pets, making it easier for animals to be identified and reunited with their owners. The company’s services are available in multiple cities, including Carlsbad, Del Mar, El Cajon, Encinitas, Escondido, Imperial Beach, La Mesa, Poway, San Diego, San Marcos, Santee, Solana Beach, Vista, and Oceanside. Residents can learn more and register their pets online at sandiego.docupet.com, or by mail, phone, or in person.
Catherine Hare, licensing supervisor at SDHS, emphasized the impact of the donation on animals currently in care.
“These donations directly support the animals in our care, providing them with medical treatment, behavior resources, and a safe place to stay until they find loving families,” she said.
Serving San Diego County since 1880, SDHS goes beyond adoption services by offering programs that strengthen the human-animal bond, prevent cruelty and neglect, provide medical care, educate the community, and serve as a safety net for pet families. Across its multiple campuses, SDHS works daily to ensure animals have access to care and protection.
The DocuPet donation arrives during one of the busiest periods in the organization’s history, providing critical support as shelters manage record numbers of animals in care. Each designer tag sale reinforces the link between responsible pet ownership and the community’s ability to care for animals in need.
