Each year, more than 4,000 high school students from across the country participate in the VFW Auxiliary’s Young American Creative Patriotic Art contest, a scholarship contest that recognizes up-and-coming artists and encourages patriotism in youth.
Lakeside VFW Auxiliary President Leanna Brown said the best part of the contest is that it’s a good way for kids to be creative but also learn about patriotism.
“This is not someone lecturing them or telling them how they should feel, this is a way for them to look inside themselves and decide what they inherently feel,” Brown said.
District level winners are advanced to state level. The first-place winner from each state competes for national awards totaling $31,500.
Students in grades 9-12 are welcome to apply. For more information and applications visit: www.vfwauxiliary.org or a local VFW posts.
