The adobe house and surrounding grounds have a long history, mostly due to the presence of a nearby spring. This water source attracted people thousands of years ago to use the area. These people, the Indians presently known as Kumeyaay, left evidence of their encampments in the vicinity.

In 1964, The Bancroft Ranch House became  a registered National Historic Landmark in of the work of Hubert Howe Bancroft a famous historian  who owned the ranch from 1885 until his death in 1918.

On the evening of August 3, The Spring Valley Historical Society and Non-profit organization who has a membership of 120 members had their annual fund raiser. It started with a potluck of scrumptious food and grilled hotdogs. Then it was followed by an auction and a raffle. All the items auctioned and raffled off were donated by local stores and businesses.

Robert Case has been the president of the Spring Valley Historical Society for the past five years.

He said, “I have been a member since the 90’s. I have always had an abiding love of local history and I used to be an archeologist. I used to dig in this yard years ago when this was a Native American site.”
