Effective July 1, the speed limit on Lemon Avenue from Garfield Street to Bancroft Drive has been reduced from 35 mph to 30 mph.
The change, marked by updated speed limit signs and legends installed Monday morning, reflects the new Safety Corridor designation. This segment of Lemon Avenue was designated a Safety Corridor due to its proximity to an elementary school, necessitating enhanced safety measures to protect pedestrians, particularly school children.
This decision follows the City Council’s approval of an ordinance amending chapter 12.64 of the La Mesa Municipal Code during the June 25 City Council Meeting.
In alignment with ongoing efforts to prioritize pedestrian and cyclist safety, the City of La Mesa is developing a plan to identify additional safety corridors near schools, parks, and other areas with high pedestrian and bicycle traffic. These locations will undergo evaluations and will be presented to the Mobility Commission and City Council for approval at a future date.
