God’s voice has reverberated in Santee in many ways. Morgan Freeman, aka “God,” dined and was heard at Santee’s Carlton Oaks Country Club and events coordinator, Yvette Lynch, even waited on him in 2002. Freeman, who played God in the movie, “Bruce Almighty,” would have approved of the new comedy club at the Oaks Bar & Grill Restaurant.  After all “Bruce Almighty” was a comedy.

Legends Comedy Club held its grand opening on Aug. 15 with a whole rotation of funny people starting with co-founder of Legends Comedy Club and master of ceremonies Dan Biblitz, followed by Biblitz’s other partner, Brandon Young, former East County resident Bijan Mostafavi, and Jen Kober.

Kober appeared on “The Mindy Project,” “Anger Management,” and “Grudge Match” with Robert De Niro, among other films. Kober, bringing her unique presence, humor and Justin Bieber inspired haircut, headlined the evening.

Brandon Young was the one who scouted out places to start this Friday and Saturday night only club and after negotiating with Carlton Oaks’ Adam Mora struck a deal to let the comedy roll starting at 9:30 p.m. each night.

Biblitz said the touring headliners and other comedians are booked at the golf and resort club until late October.  There is a two-drink minimum and cover charge.  While there are new comedy clubs sprouting up like the Laugh Factory and other standards like the Comedy Store in La Jolla. Biblitz claims this is East County’s first comedy club in this format and type of location.

Army buddies celebrating their most recent every-30-day reunions had one of the buddies, Ian Nicklen of San Diego, citing an Oaks bartender as his information source on when opening night occurred. These Army buddies were ready for a laugh and laugh they did thru out the night.

The killing ‘em with humor kicked off with Biblitz’s claim that other people have payments on cars and houses—his is on pots and pans.

Young’s notes around the house saying I Love You confused his wife because she thought they were for her. He claimed his narcissism was the basis of the notes.

Bijan Mostafavi had stories about roommates and bees and a sweet dancing vibe going on when he danced on stage.

Kober dominated the stage with jokes about parenting her significant other’s kids among other stories. Her stage presence and comic delivery nailed all of her lines. Of note was finding out that the color preference does matter when buying school supplies for a school-year-just-around-the-corner student.

The night contained rowdy humor, sublime humor, and just plain corny humor. As has been said humor is the best medicine and the opening night crowd loved their dose.
