Early results as of press time Wednesday showed San Diego City Councilwoman Monica Montgomery Steppe ahead in the race for County Supervisor District 4, with roughly 40% of the vote . District 4 includes the cities and communities of Lemon Grove, La Mesa, Spring Valley, Crest – Dehesa, Casa de Oro and Mt Helix, Rancho San Diego Clairemont (Bay Park, Bay Ho, Clairemont Mesa, North Clairemont), Hillcrest, Balboa Park, North Park, Bankers Hill, Old Town, Mission Hills, Normal Heights, University Heights, Oak Park, Webster, Valencia Park, Encanto, Bay Terraces, Paradise Hills, Skyline, Kearney Mesa, Linda Vista, Birdland, Serra Mesa, Civita, portions of Grantville, City Heights, Rolando, Azalea Park, Chollas Creek, Rolando Park, Kensington-Talmadge, Mid-City, Montezuma Mesa, SDSU Mission Valley.
The seat became vacant earlier this year after then County Supervisor Nathan Fletcher resigned his position amidst allegations of sexual harassment in connection with his role on the San Diego Association of Governments.
In an interview with The East County Californian earlier this year Montgomery Steppe, a Democrat, said “As a supervisor, I would take a role in unincorporated areas of being that local representative that folks can go to for all their concerns. We have built a reputation of putting constituents and community members first, responding to their needs, and making the government work for folks.”
If no one wins 50% of the vote in Tuesday’s election, the top two vote getters will face off in a Nov. 7 election.
