What sophomore Davian McGowan started, senior Ruben Hernandez finished as the host Mount Miguel Matadors defeated the Monte Vista Monarchs, their cross-town rival, by a score of 41-0 last Friday in a Grossmont Valley League football game.

The scoring frenzy helped top off the debut of the school’s new stadium scoreboard.

McGowan opened scoring in the game with a pair of touchdown runs in the first quarter. He blasted in from 39 yards for the game’s first points, then added a one-yard touchdown run.

Sophomore quarterback Jeremiah Castillo helped the Matadors (1-1 in league, 2-2 overall) open up a 20-0 lead when he completed a touchdown pass to senior Elijah Black.

Hernandez finished the game with three touchdowns, the first from 37 yards in the first half and from 48 and 60 yards in the second half.

Hernandez had averaged 72 rushing yards per game entering last Friday’s contest. He now has scored six rushing touchdowns in four games. The pair of rushing scores were the first for McGowan this season.

McGowan had entered the rivalry game against Monte Vista averaging 73 rushing yards per game.

The shutout was the second recorded by Mount Miguel this season and the third suffered by Monte Vista in six games.

The Matadors have won two of their last three games but will face a challenge this Friday by hosting league co-leader El Capitan (2-0 in league, 5-1 overall).
