Fingers move across the fret board of the guitar with delicate intensity as the bow on the fiddle sings a familiar sad song about a hotel in California. One can almost feel the warm sun on the skin and hear the gentle waves as they crash upon the rocky shore.

Classically trained fiddler/violinist Alex Depue and guitarist Miguel De Hoyos are masters of their craft and they weaved their spell on the enraptured audience at the Joan B. Kroc Theatre.

From classical to classic rock, Depue and De Hoyos played a wide range of musical styles and while only one of the pieces they performed was original, they added enough of their own unique flavor to make every song theirs.

A standout was the classic rock medley of Led Zeppelin’s “Stairway to heaven” and The Eagles’ “Hotel California”, which saw Depue impressively mimicking the electric guitar on his fiddle.

De Hoyos showed the true range of his talent on “Mexican Medley”, an amalgamation of songs from De Hoyos’ native Mexico. His fingers worked magic on the guitar, strumming beautiful note after beautiful note.

Other standouts included the ingenious mixing of the classic show tune “All I ask of you” from Andrew Lloyd Webber’s “The Phantom of the Opera” and Santana’s “Black Magic Woman” and the heartbreakingly beautiful gypsy melody “Czardas.”

The duo played well off each other, keeping things light by cracking jokes and exchanging witty banter. At one point they performed “Dueling Banjos” to great comedic effect, with De Hoyos playing straight man to Depue’s manic energy.

De Hoyos and Depue put on an amazing show, with reverent sensitivity. The two also showed that they are truly the Abbott and Costello of string instruments.
