Light touch planned downtown

Downtown El Cajon will sparkle brighter than ever this holiday season as the Holiday Lights in Downtown El Cajon celebration returns on Saturday, Nov. 29, from 4 to 8 p.m. The free, family-friendly event transforms the heart of El Cajon into a festive wonderland filled with live entertainment, an artisan market, children’s activities, photos with Santa, and the annual tree lighting ceremony led by Mayor Bill Wells at 6:15 p.m.

What started as a small local gathering in 2017 has become one of East County’s most beloved seasonal traditions.

“The Holiday Lights in Downtown El Cajon began as a way to bring locals together to kick off the holiday season and support our vibrant business community,” said Gabby Manocchio, assistant district manager of the Downtown El Cajon Association. “Since then, it has grown into a cherished community tradition. Nearly a decade later, we’re proud to continue celebrating the holiday spirit—introducing fresh experiences that build on years of success and inviting visitors from across San Diego County to discover the magic of Downtown El Cajon.”

Each year, the celebration evolves with new attractions while preserving the small-town warmth that makes it special. This year’s festivities will feature a curated artisan market with handcrafted goods, a trackless train, a micro-bubble snow machine, a letters to Santa station, and photos with Santa in front of a vintage VW Bus. Families can also visit a Parks & Recreation–sponsored kids’ craft area, enjoy live music and performances, and stroll through a newly added festive lighted walkway connecting Artist Alley to Main Street.

“The artisan market will feature a vibrant mix of handmade crafts, including crocheted goods, candles, and unique jewelry,” Manocchio said. “Guests can enjoy delicious treats from local food vendors while browsing the booths. Local artists will display their original works, creating a lively, community-driven atmosphere.”One of the most anticipated features each year is the Snow Zone, where kids can experience “Santa’s magic snow bubble machine.”

“We’re aiming to create a sense of holiday magic,” Manocchio said. “Kids can also enjoy writing letters to Santa, the craft zone, the train ride, and plenty of family-friendly entertainment throughout the evening.”

The event’s live entertainment lineup displays local talent from across San Diego County:

“We select family-friendly, holiday-themed entertainment with a focus on local performers to keep the event festive and community-driven,” Manocchio said.

The performances set the stage for the evening’s highlight, the tree lighting ceremony, where Mayor Wells will officially illuminate the downtown Christmas tree.

“The tree lighting is the centerpiece of the event, symbolizing community connection and holiday spirit,” she said.

For families attending for the first time, Manocchio offers a few insider tips: “There’s ample street parking surrounding the event area—arrive a little early to snag a good spot and avoid last-minute stress. Take time to explore the full downtown area—Prescott Promenade, Main Street, and Artist Alley—each has its own charm and event features. And most importantly, bring friends or family. The event is designed for all ages, so whether you’ve got kids or are just looking for a festive night out, there’s something for everyone.”

Beyond the twinkling lights and cheerful music, the Holiday Lights event carries an important mission—to highlight the revitalized Downtown El Cajon and its growing mix of shops, restaurants, and businesses.

“The event—along with the light displays and window decorations—helps draw visitors to downtown, encouraging them to explore, shop, and support local businesses,” Manocchio said. “It’s about gathering the community and bringing greater awareness to all that Downtown El Cajon has to offer.
