‘East County Youth Coalition’
As an educator at Monte Vista High School I am very proud of the students in this group. They have acquired advocacy skills they will take into the future as valued community residents. Like them, I am also concerned about the high numbers of liquor stores that are out of compliance with the required business operating standards. We work hard to improve the community character of Spring Valley and look at bringing all the alcohol advertising, litter and graffiti under control as a positive step in the right direction. Alcohol advertising covering all the store windows isn’t just unseemly; I understand research studies reveal that exposure to this type of advertising increases the likelihood that adolescents will start to use alcohol, and to drink more if they are already using alcohol. I hope the students are able to go back to the planning group when there is a quorum, to present the findings of this important field study of their route to and from school.
