La Mesa-Spring Valley School District appoints new board member

Longtime La Mesa resident and architect Gerald Lecko was sworn in as the newest board member of the La Mesa-Spring Valley School District on March 18.

Lecko was appointed to the post that was vacated by Penny Halgren, who resigned in January of this year.
“Halgren had been on the board for 18 years, serving with much committed dedication,” Lecko said, adding, “I am honored for this opportunity to serve the two years left on her current term, after which, I am planning on running for re-election.”

Lecko was appointed to the post that was vacated by Penny Halgren, who resigned in January of this year.
“Halgren had been on the board for 18 years, serving with much committed dedication,” Lecko said, adding, “I am honored for this opportunity to serve the two years left on her current term, after which, I am planning on running for re-election.”

Lecko was appointed to the board through an application process in order to avoid the costs of a special election. He beat Steve Babbit, Robert Divine II, Ben Motten, Jay Steiger and Mike Stewart, all five hopeful applicants similarly vying for the vacated board seat.

A chairman of the Citizens Bond Oversight Committee and past chairman of the Mt. Helix Parent Teacher Association, among various other PTAs, Lecko is an architect and design studio owner with two grown children, who personally experienced the benefits of the school district, which he presently will help to impact.
“Both my wife and I were PTA presidents and we are grateful for the wonderful schools in our community and district,” Lecko stated.

Asked about what he hopes his vision will be contributing as a board member, Lecko emphasized that he is “pleased to be joining a team that is committed to work toward enhancing and improving a successful relationship between the home, parent and school.”

“I see this opportunity as a great honor and privilege to work with such a fine and dedicated group of educational professionals and support staff educating and supporting our children,” he said.

“I hope to provide wise, thoughtful and reasonable leadership, respect and commitment in bringing together various groups of parents, families, teachers, support staff, district administration and community agencies for the benefit of our children and the future of the greater La Mesa-Spring Valley area,” Lecko added.

With an exemplary and long history of commitment to public service, Lecko looks forward to ultimately upholding and advancing the school district’s mission statement that aims “to inspire learning and respect.”

Lecko summed up his beliefs by stating, “Students are beneficiaries of the interactions of the adults in their lives. I regard this opportunity as not only a privilege but a great honor and truly want to represent our community to the best of my ability.”
