In an effort to continue providing for all segments of the community, the City of La Mesa announced the opening of a fitness plaza as part of the city’s Adult Enrichment Center.
The public gained access during a parade last week, but the official grand opening was held Wednesday with a ribbon cutting ceremony.
Four pieces of fitness equipment are available to the public under a gazebo at the center, located at 8450 La Mesa Boulevard, across the street from historic Kuhlken Baseball Field where the street splits off from University Avenue.
A generous donation of more than $8,000 to purchase the equipment was made by the Rotary Club of La Mesa and Rotary District No. 5340 in San Diego County.
“We just hate to call it a ‘senior center’ because so many people in our city who are over 60 are still active and are not retired,” said Mike Pacheco, the city’s community services manager who coordinated the project. “The equipment will enhance the lives of these people by helping them keep fit.”
Pacheco noted that a piece of equipment acts like a bench press, another for the body core, then an apparatus for leg work. There is also a bicycle for cardio fitness.
Bill Hale, who works as a volunteer dance instructor at the enrichment center, is already lauding the city and Rotary for the equipment.
“This is a wonderful opportunity for people like us (over 60) to stay fit and healthy,” noted Hale, 64. “The equipment is easy to use, plus uses your own body weight for resistance.”
Hale, along with Jane Stokes, is part of an ensemble of instructors who teach dance, which is another fun and easy to remain in shape. The center offers a variety of dance classes in square dance, round dance, ballroom and more,
