Helix wrestling tournament to showcase Highlanders’ mat men

The 2013-14 high school wrestling season is entering its stretch run and, with that, the annual Helix High School varsity tournament on tap this Saturday, Feb. 1. 

Highlanders coach Adam Krzywicki said the East County tournament offers participating teams an excellent opportunity to get in a few more matches before the end of the regular season as well as additional experience for varsity-B wrestlers.

The Scotties have been getting plenty of experience this season and showing well for it.

Helix notched a meteoric second-place team finish at the Monte Vista Invitational on Jan. 18, finishing the 21-team event; the Highlanders competed at last weekend’s San Pasqual Invitational, placing 13th in the 27-team field.

The Highlanders’ runner-up performance at the Monte Vista tournament was impressive. Helix stamped its name on the tournament with three weight class champions and six place-winners overall.

Helix’s individual champions included Trence Gillem (126), Walter Todd (160) and Mozi Schwalger (170). Medalists also included Mile Baack (second, 120), Mike Fajardo (third, 195) and Jerome David (fourth, 182).

The Scotties entered that tournament 4-1 in dual meet competition, including a 1-1 record in Grossmont Hills League duals. 

“I have a bunch of consistent kids who are working hard every day, gaining confidence and believing in themselves,” Krzywicki said. “They put in a lot of work during the off-season and it’s showing dividends right now.”

The Scotties recorded three medalists at last Saturday’s San Pasqual Invitational: Todd (first, 162), Gillem (second, 128) and Spencer Pham (fifth, 108). 

Todd defeated Mission Hills’ Alex Penning in the championship round while Gillem dropped a championship match-up against Ramona’s Vince Adair.

Monte Vista Invitational

San Ysidro won the team title, followed by Helix (second), Mira Mesa (third), Beckman (fourth), Morse (fifth), Grossmont (sixth) and host Monte Vista (seventh). Among other East County mat squads, Mt. Miguel placed 10th while Steele Canyon tied for 11th, West Hills was 15th, Mountain Empire was 18th and Santana was 21st.

Grossmont, which finished just one point out of fifth place and 2.5 points out of fourth place, had two weight class champions: Sebastian Chan (106) and Edgar Alvarez (195). The Foothillers’ three other medal-winners included Jason Tiensvold (third, 160), Bryce Harmon (third, 170) and Jorge Ramos (fourth, 113).

Mt. Miguel had five medalists, led by 138-pound champion Nathan Ontiveros. Other Matador place-winners included Jerusalem Tausaga (third, 285), Dominic McCall (fifth, 152), Roger Anaya (fifth, 182) and Edward Marin (sixth, 170).

West Hills and Mountain Empire each had one finalist. Mavrick Mooneyham finished second at 113 pounds for West Hills while Troy Clark finished second at 195 pounds for Mountain Empire.

Steele Canyon’s three medalists included Garett Diem (third, 182), Junior Fischer (fourth, 195) and Christian Perez (sixth, 113).

West Hills’ other medalist included Tristan Bonventre (fifth, 126). 

San Pasqual Invitational

Granite Hills finished eighth, followed by El finished (10th).  Mira Mesa won the team title ahead of Carlsbad (second), Ramona (third), San Pasqual (fourth) and Hilltop (fifth).

Leading Granite Hills were Chase Shirley (third, 172), Shea Wheatley (fourth, 140), Francisco Saavedra (fourth, 287), Victor Garcia (fifth, 222) and Alex Mack (sixth, 197).

El Capitan’s place-winners included Cameron Gritz (third, 140), Kevin Hoyt (fourth, 222), Josh Rust (fifth, 162), Justin Duggie (sixth, 122) and Robert Kennedy (sixth, 184).
