For more than 80 years, the World Famous Harlem Globetrotters basketball team has been showcasing their energetic and comedic brand of basketball in arenas spanning 120 countries every season.

The Original Harlem Globetrotters hosted their 2nd annual Summer Skills basketball Clinic tour at the Santee 24 Hour Fitness Club. Globetrotter stars Brawley “Cheese” Chisholm and Anthony “Buckets” Blakes hosted boys and girls aged six to 12 in two-hour sessions June 17-20 designed to teach about basketball, and life.

“We like to call our sessions skills, drills and thrills,” said Blakes. “These programs are one of many programs we present to more than 400 schools and clinics we teach every season.”

Kids laughed along with the coaches as they learned the fundamentals of basketball such as the importance of stretching before an activity, dribbling and passing skills, making shots and layups, and working together as a team.

High-fives, giant grins and unique Harlem Globetrotter antics aside, coaches “Buckets” Blakes and “Cheese” Chisholm take on another role as teachers, educating the kids about character development skills off the court.

“We teach them the ‘C.H.E.E.R. For Character,” Blakes said. “The C is for cooperation, H is for healthy mind and body, the first E is for effort, the second E is for enthusiasm, and R for responsibility. We also teach them the ABC’s of bully prevention, A for action, B for bravery, and C for Compassion. We want every kid in our clinics to know how to be better individuals on the court and in life.”

Mini-Globetrotters took home a signature Globetrotter nickname, an autographed certificate and pictures with their coaches and most importantly, a life-long memory.
