Grossmont High School’s tackle football team may not complete an undefeated season, but it will do so with respect after falling, 28-20, at seventh-ranked Point Loma last Friday.
The Foothillers are now 3-1 while Point Loma improved to 4-0.
Grossmont enters this week ranked 23rd among the section’s 75 11-player tackle teams — one tick behind No. 22 Christian (3-0) and one tick ahead of No. 24 Steele Canyon (1-2).
The Foothillers host Otay Ranch (2-2) this Friday.
“We did not take advantage of our opportunities and they did,” Foothillers head coach Anthony Lawrence said following his team’s first loss on the season. “They are a great team but we don’t want to celebrate moral victories. We want to win football games.
“We are still too sloppy and our execution needs to improve but we are getting there. Tyler (Holmes) has been playing great. He gets in trouble when he tries to do too much on his own but he keeps us in every game.”
Grossmont struck for a 14-7 first quarter lead but were out-scored 18-6 in the second half.
Holmes completed 11 of 25 passing attempts for 159 yards with one touchdown and one interception. He also rushed 19 times for 57 yards and one touchdown.
Junior Cedric Norris scored on a one-yard touchdown run while senior Max Bewley caught a 13-yard touchdown pass.
The Foothillers rushed for 120 yards. Junior Jacob Fee added 39 yards on 12 carries. Bewley had five catches for 71 yards.
Holmes collected 219 of his team’s 279 total yards in offense. He is averaging 203.8 passing yards per game and 82.5 rushing yards per game — 286.3 total yards per game.
On the season he has passed for six touchdowns and rushed for five scores.
Senior Rudy Gomez led the Grossmont defense with 10 tackles while junior Jackson Baird had one sack and senior Darlon Crawford had one interception.
