Happening at your El Cajon Branch Library

Dear library supporters:

The headline this month, unfortunately, is that our library flooded in January, and you may notice some areas that are closed and under construction to address issues related to the flood. As usual, the magnificent El Cajon staff dealt with the emergency with calm, competent, cheerful professionalism. I was on the East Coast helping my mother with a knee replacement operation! It’s odd that last time the branch flooded, I was away also. The staff is wondering if this is pure coincidence…

Here’s a sampling of our terrific adult programs in February:

Please join us on Saturday, Feb. 11 at 2:00 p.m. for a reception and celebration of the art and life of Raúl Anguiano. His paintings will be shown at the El Cajon Library in partnership with Arte en la Industria, an initiative of Tijuana Innovadora that brings art and culture to the workplace. All are welcome.

Loteria (Mexican Bingo), Sunday, Feb. 12 at 2 p.m. Enjoy music, refreshments and loteria. All adults are welcome.

Love Your Heart: Free blood pressure screenings, Tuesday, Feb. 14 from 9:30 a.m.– 3:30 p.m. Make sure your heart is in good working order for Valentine’s Day!

Tales Out Loud, Friday, Feb. 17 at 2 p.m. Actor Walter Ritter will read a variety of entertaining and literary works. Relax, listen and let your imagination run free.

Recognizing Unhealthy Relationships, Saturday, Feb. 18 at 2 p.m. Dr. Lynda Ariella reveals the warning signs of physical, psychological and emotionally abusive relationships.

LEARN Tutor Training, Saturday,Feb. 25 at 10 a.m.Here’s a perfect opportunity to make a real difference in someone’s life; give someone the gift of literacy by helping them learn to read and write.

My Masterpiece @ the Library, Sunday, Feb. 26 at 2 p.m. Explore a different artist each month and create your own masterpiece! We provide the supplies; you bring the creativity.

Color Me Calm, Saturdays at 2 p.m. A weekly gathering for adults to enjoy good company, refreshments, and the therapeutic benefits of coloring. Sponsored by the Friends of the El Cajon Library.

Career Online High School. We still have some spaces left in our Career Online High School program — earn a diploma online, free, with eight possible career tracks. Go to www.sdcl.org/cohs to find out more. You must be 19 or older.

Youth and family programs in February:

New! Niko Niko Nihongo Circle, Sunday, Feb. 5 at 2 p.m. Japanese-speaking kids and families enjoy crafts and cultural activities. Conducted in Japanese only; please contact Miko at 619-588-3718 or at fosada@sdcounty.ca.gov. Pre-registration is required.

New! Whisk-Takers Cooking Club, Sunday, Feb. 12 at 2 p.m. Hands-on cooking lessons for teens 12-18. Limited to the first 24 people; sign-up starts at 1 p.m.

Little Listeners Story Time, Tuesdays at 10 a.m. For ages 3 and under.

Chess Club, Tuesdays from 4-6 pm and Saturdays from 1-3 p.m. This ancient game teaches patience, strategy and peaceful competition. All ages welcome!

El Cajon Exploratorium, Saturdays at 1 p.m. Art and hands-on activities for kids 4 and up.

Selfie-made Sundays, at 1 p.m. Create art with the supplies we provide. Then if you like, share a snapshot of your creation with us on our social media pages.

Please note: The library will be closed Monday, Feb. 20 in honor of Presidents’ Day.
