Homegrown and sustainable are popular features in current cuisine. But the same holds true for good music, and folk duo Bones On Loan is demonstrating that in monthly appearances at Santee’s Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 9327.
Lead male vocalist in the band is Spencer Todd, son of a member of the Auxiliary at the Post and stepson of an officer with the co-located Santee American Legion Post 364. His fellow bandmate, Anisa Fehri is also his fiancée. They plan to be married this fall.

The pair has been singing together for three years. They play acoustic folk and blues music and complement each other’s voices in tight harmonies and easy swaps of vocal leads. Their evening performance on Saturday, June 6, included classic folk standards and folk rock from the repertoires of Simon and Garfunkel and Creedence Clearwater Revival. Todd plays guitar, banjo, harmonica and spoons. Fehri accompanies on guitar.
Each landed in folk and blues from different musical directions. When Todd was 13, he picked up his father’s old bass guitar and learned how to play classic rock music and current rock. He got a cheap amplifier and played along with radio music.
Fehri began studying music when she was 15 and in high school. She was initially attracted to mainstream county music, then branched off into acoustic and folk music during backyard and camping jam sessions with friends. Todd agrees that the natural, easy style of playing outdoors aligns well with folk and blues.
“Music is mostly fun,” Todd.
As for their day jobs, Fehri works as a hairstylist. Todd works for Taylor Guitars doing side bending for the guitar-making process.
Bones On Loan is slated to be opening act for the Santee Summer Concert Series on August 6, at the Town Center Community Park East. They plan to continue appearing once monthly at the Santee VFW Post, located at 8790 Cuyamaca Street, Suite F. More information on their scheduled appearances there can be obtained by calling the Post at (619) 562-4022.
