Our annual Summer Reading Program (sign up at www.sdcl.org/src<http://www.sdcl.org/src>) is still going on, through August. You can keep your reading log online and collect your prize (for adults, this includes a free book) at the branch. The more you read the more chances you have of winning the grand prize of an e-reader.

We still have some spaces left in our Career Online High School program — earn a diploma online, free, with eight possible career tracks. Go to www.sdcl.org/cohs<http://www.sdcl.org/cohs> to find out more. You must be 19 or older.

Here’s a sampling of our special programs in late July/August:

Savvy Composting, Saturday, July 30 at 2 p.m. Learn the secrets of this environmentally friendly process with Rebecca Whelpley.

Hydroponic Gardening with Alex Kallasof, Saturday, August 6 at 2 p.m. AgPALS will show you how to grow phenomenal fruits and vegetables with this method.

Senior Mobile Technology Lab, Monday, August 8 at 1:30 p.m. Over 60? Need some tutoring on Facebook, email, and personal devices? This is the program for you.

Friends of the Library Bookstore 50% off Sale, Saturday, August 6, 10 – 2 pm. Raise money for the library and stock your own shelves with this fabulous sale.

Ongoing programs include:

Veterans’ Services, Monday, Aug. 8 and Monday, Aug. 22 from 9:30 a.m.– 1:00 p.m. Assistance with claims, appeals, public assistance, homelessness issues and VA medical care.

East County Writers, Friday, August 1 and Friday, August 15 at 10 a.m. San Diego Writers, Ink offers a one-hour drop-in group for writers.

Chess Club, Tuesdays, 4 – 6 p.m., and Saturdays, 1 – 3 p.m. Improve your game or just spend an enjoyable couple of hours playing; all ages and skill levels welcome.

Free Legal Clinic, Wednesdays, 1 – 3 pm. Through a partnership with the San Diego Law Library, the Thomas Jefferson Center for Solo Practitioners offers individual counseling with an attorney. First come, first served.

Social Worker at the Library, Thursdays, 3 – 5 p.m. Referrals/assistance with emergency services, family matters, immigration, support groups and more.

Laubach ESL Class, Saturdays at 11:30 a.m. Learn English at the library, in a friendly setting.

Youth and Family:

El Cajon Library Birthday Party with John Abrams, Tuesday, August 2 at 1 p.m. An animal magic show with John Abrams, crafts, and cake to celebrate.

After-Hours Potter Party for Teens, Friday, August 5 from 6-10 p.m. Fun for both Harry Potter fans and Muggles in grades 6-12! Battle of Hogwarts Tag, Harry Potter crafts, henna tattoos, special effects make up, pizza, video games, and more! Registration is required – please pick up a permission slip at the library.

Summer Crafternoon, Monday-Friday, August 2-August 16 at 1 p.m. Once our summer programs end on August 2, we will still have a craft for kids through Tuesday, August 16.

Regular programs at the library for youth and families in August:

Little Listeners’ Story Time, Tuesdays at 10 a.m. Stories and songs for babies and toddlers ages 3 and under.

Teen Anime Club, Tuesdays at 6 pm. Friendly atmosphere, nice people, ages 12-19.

Baby Story Time, Fridays at 10 a.m. Stories, music and play for the small folks, ages 0-18 months.
