East County athletes swim strong during championship matches

Bishop’s Tom Anderson stole the show with a pair of San Diego Section records, but East County performers almost posted some marks at the CIF Swimming Championships, held Saturday in two divisions at the East County Aquatics Center at Granite Hills High.

West Hills senior Caleb Davies established a record in the 50 free, teammate Sarah Nowaski took a pair of gold, as did Steele Canyon’s Marco Russo.

West Hills senior Caleb Davies established a record in the 50 free, teammate Sarah Nowaski took a pair of gold, as did Steele Canyon’s Marco Russo.

Earlier in the week, Anderson broke the longest-standing record on the CIFSDS books in the 100 back, and then broke it again during the final in 48.94 seconds. Anderson also set a record in the 200 IM.

Davies, the defending silver medalist, sprinted to a time of 20.39, eclipsing the year-old mark by 2012 champion Brandon Crabtree of El Centro-Southwest, who just resumed training after tearing the meniscus in his knee.

Davies also placed second in the 100 free to Russo, to also captured the 200 free (1:38.65).

Nowaski made her CIF debut one to remember. The freshman was clocked in 1:49.92 to knock off two-time defending champion Ros Kackman of Cathedral Catholic in the 200 free, then dominated the field for a win in the 500 free. (4:53.94).

Kackman came back to win the 100 fly (56.20), lifting the Lady Dons to a sixth consecutive team crown in Division II. Torrey Pines gained the Division I title.

On the boys’ team standings, titles went to Carlsbad in Division I and Mt. Carmel in Division II.

Among East County individuals, Thomas Hodgson of Granite Hills took Division I medals in the 200 IM (silver) and 100 breast (bronze). In Division II, Santana’s Sara Lenhoff was second in the girls 100 back, and Valhalla’s Cortney Bayuk was also a runner-up in the 100 breast.
