His parents are both world champion athletes in their respective sports, yet Santana High sophomore Chase Webster maintains neither had nothing to do with his choice of athletic participation.

“I saw my older brother diving in high school,” noted Webster. “I saw it and thought it looked like fun—none of my parents had anything to do with it.”

Still, it must be in his genes.

“I saw my older brother diving in high school,” noted Webster. “I saw it and thought it looked like fun—none of my parents had anything to do with it.”

Still, it must be in his genes.

Last Friday, Webster achieved success his older sibling never obtained, capturing the CIF Division II diving championship, held at San Diego Mesa College.

Webster registered a score of 285.20 points over six dives from the 1-meter springboard, easily out-distancing defending champion Ryan Kranz of Steele Canyon by 36 points. Webster’s mark was also better than the total by the Division I champion.

With his title, Webster is also the first Sultans diver to capture CIF gold since boys two-time champion Tom Reed (1987-88) and girls three-time titlist Eileen Maul (1985-87).

“I really wanted to win,” he noted. “Diving will get me into a good college and help me a great start in life.”

His brother, Garet, is already on such a path. A CIF bronze medalist in 2012, he now competes for UC San Diego.

Chase’s parents are Dustin and Becca Webster, both professional cliff-divers for Red Bull Cliff Diving, and later rock crawled for World Extreme Rock Crawling.

Becca, a 3-time world champion in rock crawling, is also Santana alum for the CIF champion gymnastics team. “Dusty” captured numerous world cliff-diving crowns and was the first North American professional athlete sponsored by Red Bull.

Dustin also serves as the Santana diving coach.

Other East County divers among the top 10 finishers were: Jacob Bachofner (Santana), 7th place; Frankie Lima (El Capitan), 8th; Ian Quadros (Steele Canyon), 9th; and Jojit Roy (Mount Miguel), 10th.

Among the girls, Alexa Jones of Steele Canyon finished fifth, Cougars teammate Autumn Schramm was eighth, while Santana’s Brooke Abrantes was 10th.
