The Otay Water District announced its 2021 its winner in the District’s WaterSmart Landscape Contest, an annual contest held by San Diego County water districts.

El Cajon resident Christine Laframboise was named “Best in District” for her water-saving landscape, design, plant selection, maintenance and efficient irrigation system.

Before her landscape upgrades, grass covered her 1,895 square-foot front yard. She took landscaping classes with the San Diego Water Authority’s WaterSmart Makeover Program, also receiving a $2,140 rebate from the Authority’s WaterSmart Makeover Program, that help support her project.

Laframboise, with the help of her husband and son, took out her grass and installed water-wise features, such as mulch, stone, low-water-use plants, a drip-irrigation system, a few rotating nozzles, and a smart irrigation controller to schedule efficient water use. Laframboise decreased her overall water use by an average of 42%.
