The city of El Cajon is inviting residents to become actively involved in local governance by applying to serve on one of five advisory commissions. These boards provide valuable guidance to the City Council and influence decisions that affect the daily lives of the community. Applications are currently being accepted for the Gillespie Field Development Council, Mission Trails Regional Park Citizens Advisory Committee, Personnel Commission, Planning Commission, and the Public Safety Facility Financing Oversight Committee.
Each commission plays a unique role in shaping the city’s operations and long-term planning. The Gillespie Field Development Council focuses on matters related to the city’s airport, providing recommendations on development, management, and community impact. Its guidance helps ensure that airport activities align with city priorities and meet the needs of residents. The Mission Trails Regional Park Citizens Advisory Committee works to preserve and enhance one of the region’s most valued natural areas, offering input on park management, programs, and public engagement. Residents serving on this committee help maintain the park’s environmental integrity while promoting recreational opportunities for the community.
The Personnel Commission reviews policies related to city staffing and employment, ensuring fair and effective human resources practices. Its work influences how the city hires, trains, and manages staff, contributing to the overall efficiency and accountability of municipal operations. Meanwhile, the Planning Commission evaluates land-use proposals, zoning changes, and development projects, offering recommendations that shape El Cajon’s growth and urban planning. These decisions affect housing, business development, and community design, making the commission’s role central to the city’s future. The Public Safety Facility Financing Oversight Committee monitors investments in police, fire, and emergency services facilities, ensuring that the city’s public safety infrastructure is properly funded and maintained. Their oversight supports the safety and well-being of all residents.
“Serving on a city commission is more than a volunteer opportunity,” said Ryan Villegas, senior management analyst, PIO. “Commissioners have a direct impact on city programs, public spaces, and municipal policies. Residents’ input helps shape the future of El Cajon.”
Residents interested in serving on a commission with an upcoming term expiration are encouraged to submit applications by Monday, Jan. 19, 2026. Those who apply by this date will be invited to interviews conducted during the City Council meeting on Jan. 27, 2026, at 7 p.m. Applications, along with information about term expirations and current vacancies, are available at the City Clerk’s Office and online at www.elcajon.gov/your-government/commissions , and help guide the city’s long-term priorities.
With multiple commissions currently accepting applications, now is an ideal time for residents who are passionate about their community to step forward.
