Students of the California Hair Design Academy (CHDA) were given creative license at their annual competition on Sunday, April 13th at the Joan B. Kroc Center in La Mesa, and the production was untamed and uninhibited in the best possible way.

In philanthropic as well as gaming spirit, each year CHDA selects a different charity to benefit from the competition. This year the Wounded Warrior Project was the recipient. Wives of Wounded Warriors were among the models who were styled by a student and took the stage for the cause. The theme of the annual competition was Welcome to the Wild and the hairdressers answered the call with not only hair, but makeup, costume, music and props.

CHDA has two campuses, one in La Mesa and one in Chula Vista. Both are accredited. Day and night classes accommodate a variety of students, some who started in cosmetology while in high school. The first ten models showcased in the competition were styled by high school students in Cosmetology ROP.

“I want to start doing more hair shows,” said Xitalli Cortex, junior at Monte Vista High School. “Just put ourselves out there, show our natural talent and what Miss T. taught us,” said MVHS senior Daniel Vasquez of his ROP teacher, Ms. Trujillo.

Students earn elective credit for 300 hours in the one year program Introduction to Cosmetology ROP at school, then take their enthusiasm straight into institutions like CHDA.

The creative range of the “wild” theme went from under the sea to tops of trees – mermaids, eagles, pandas were just a few of transformations from model to “creature” through the medium of cosmetology.

The ROP and CHDA students took the opportunity to shine at the competition but it seemed like the WWP was the clear winner of the event.

All proceeds from event ticket sales, funds raised from the silent auction and donations go straight to the WWP.

The wives of the soldiers who took the stage at the show have seen their husbands leave for tours in Iraq and Afghanistan for a combined total of five times. Their husbands are now home and belong to the Wounded Warrior Battalion West. WWP meets the needs of the wounded service members with grants, organized athletic events, recovery programs, and support initiatives, to name a few.
