Charity, one stitch at a time

The saying “Charity Begins At Home” is just what Irene Woods had in mind when she said “yes,” she would take on the project of hand sewing quilt pieces that were donated to the Tuesday Sewing Group.

This group of sewers and quilters is a part of the Woman’s Club of Lakeside. Someone donated the pieces and no one else wanted to take on the task, so Woods said she would if the funds raised from the sale of the quilt would stay in Lakeside.

Woods worked on the quilt every day for nine months, a labor of love for the queen size quilt, no small sewing task. Upon its completion the quilt won first place at the Lakeside Festival of Arts and second place at the state level.

Wood’s work sold for $1,500, to Lakesider, Dolores Grunner. Irene chose the money to go to projects she considered dear to her heart. The Cedar Fire Monument, the Historical Society, the Maine Avenue Arch Sign, Canine Companion Dogs and Wounded Warriors.

The Sewing Group is not just about quilts, they have a variety of projects that they contribute to like sewing of dolls for children in hospitals, dresses for girls in missions in Africa, dog and cat beds for the Humane Society, lap robes for people with wheel chairs and making quilts to donate to other non-profit organizations for fund raisers.

The Sewing Group meets every Tuesday morning at the Olde Community Church, 9906 Maine Avenue. You are welcome to join in the fun and camaraderie with many creative ideas to become involved in.

The Woman’s Club is also helping domestic violence. Andrea Canfield chairs this committee and collects household items for Becky’s House, which helps women and their children furnish an apartment safe from abuse and get education and training for jobs so they can make it on their own.  For more information, call Andrea Canfield at 443-3615.
