Senior Brady Jorelmon rushed 18 times for 128 yards and touchdown and senior Brandt Barker passed for 133 yards and one score as the visiting El Capitan Vaqueros remained undefeated in Grossmont Valley League play with a 14-7 win at Santana.
“It’s always great to stay in the win column,” El Capitan head coach Ron Burner said. “We just have to take one game at a time. We have our rivals both in (back-to-back) weeks to determine the league championship — Santana and then West Hills. Always tough games on both sides. Long ways to go in league.”
El Capitan improved to 3-0 in league play, 5-3 overall, with their fourth consecutive win overall.
The Vaqueros out-gained the Sultans 268-135 in total yards. Senior Ayden Banegas had one catch for 50 yards while sophomore Michael Valencia had five pass grabs totaling 60 yards.
Senior Aaron Altamirano led El Capitan defensively with 13 tackles while senior Marlon Ames had two sacks. Senior Kory Savage ruled the airwaves with three interceptions while junior Spencer Chastang had one pick.
Senior Noah Qualin (two catches, 35 yards) scored the lone touchdown for Santana (5-3 overall). Sophomore Ethan Miller passed for 84 yards with one touchdown and one interception.
Senior Aiden Thornton had 12 tackles and Qualin had an interception to key the Sultans.
The Vaqs have two home games remaining on their regular season schedule: Oct. 25 against West Hills in the team’s annual Tony Burner Memorial Trophy rivalry game and Nov. 1 against El Cajon Valley.
The trophy is named in the honor of Burner’s son Tony, who played at West Hills and later coached alongside his father at El Capitan.
The Sultans close out regular season play Nov. 1 against visiting West Hills in the teams’ annual Mayor’s Cup rivalry game.
Monte Vista 40, El Cajon Valley 12
With back-to-back wins, the Monarchs are suddenly moving within reach of a playoff berth.
Sixty-four teams in the section make the post-season cut and Monte Vista entered this week at No. 64.
Junior Rahshawn Florence and senior Alex Villianueva each scored three touchdowns to lead the Pride offensively. Florence scored on catches of 52 and 29 yards and returned a kickoff 90 yards for a touchdown while Villanueva rushed for 117 yards on 29 carries with two touchdowns and returned the opening kickoff 83 yards for a touchdown.
Freshman Edwin Carmona passed for 224 yards and two touchdowns — one each to sophomore Amir Miller (six catches, 121 yards) and senior Fabian Carmona (two catches, 69 yards).
WEST HILLS 30, VALHALLA 13
The host Wolf Pack scored four rushing touchdowns to grab their first league win (1-2) and level their record at 4-4 at the expense of the Norsemen, who fell to 1-2 in league play, 3-5 overall.
Senior Ryder Alexander (13 carries, 105 yards) scored twice via the run while senior Joey Hamilton (12 carries, 69 yards) and senior Edgard Leon (five carries, 79 yards) each scored one rushing touchdown.
Hamilton tacked on 39 passing yards. Senior Brayden Reed had one catch for 15 yards.
West Hills rolled up 307 total yards, 268 rushing yards.
Senior Kevin White had two sacks while senior Marshon Mitchell had one interception.
FOOTHILLS 86, CALVIN 58
Foothills Christian school record for most points scored in a game as senior Kameron Brown rushed for 312 yards in an eight-person Ocean League game last Friday.
Brown had 197 all-purpose yards and five touchdowns in a 47-0 non-league win over Noli Indian on Oct. 4.
The Knights improved to 1-0 in league, 6-2 overall, with last Friday’s win.
