Iraqi Center for Dialogue holds Parent & Youth workshop

May Hasan is the Family Resource Center Case Manager for the El Cajon Valley High School. The group of approximately fifteen included young parents, grandparents, males and females, and a former male journalist who has contributed to the BBC and Reuters according to Hasan.  

The presentation was primarily In Arabic with some use of words, in English, relating to WIFI, internet, XBOX and names of books like “Waking the Tiger: Healing Trauma” by Peter A. Levine and Ann Frederick and “The Gifts of Imperfection: Let Go of Who You Think You’re Supposed to be and Embrace Who You Are” by Brene Brown.

I.C.D. director Jawdat Al Obeidi said. “This is an introductory workshop for parents and youth.” Hasan utilized her laptop to illustrate a human brain and the dry erasable board to emphasize and illustrate the workshop’s main points.

May Hason relayed the structure of her presentation:

The importance of school attendance.

It is important to follow the rules of school and respect the role of schools.

Introduced “grounding techniques” and the importance of spending quality time with your children.

Discipline, but with love.  Love heals. Use positive discipline with firmness and kindness.

 “How can we deal with bullies? Can I do this to my child or will I be in trouble with the law?” said Hasan, who explained some of the questions she was asked.  Motivating kids, dealing with children who have come from war zones and the impact that trauma makes on the brain were other points. 

In Arabic Hasan pointed out elementary, middle, and high school policies of zero tolerance, bullying, and the use of any physical touch. The workshop’s atmosphere included humorous interactions and a sense-of-any-question-is-fine mentality.

Hasan, an Iraqi native, has received community awards, is asked to speak at other meetings, and is considering writing a book about her life’s experiences.
