After raising my two boys who are now married with families of their own and being married myself for over 30 years (to Bob), and having five beautiful grandchildren, I was looking to open my own store,” said Tammy.
“We always wanted to do retail. My family lives in Maine and my cousin there opened up a consignment store. I soon felt that it was time to start my own business and because I’m a frequent secondhand shopper, it just made sense to start a consignment shop,” said Veronica. “It only took three weeks to get it going,” she added.
Their first store opened in Lakeside in September 2011. Their lease was up and they moved to their current location in Santee in September 2012.
“When we first opened, we had no overhead for inventory. We started collecting clothes several weeks prior to opening from family and friends, so all we needed were the fixtures, which we were able to mainly get off of Craig’s List,” added Tammy. She is proud that all of the items were secondhand, contributing to the theme of the shop, which is beautifully decorated in a boutique setting with hues of pink and black and white.
“We both chose an Audrey Hepburn theme because she’s classic,” said Veronica. “My mom Dorothy was my inspiration, she taught me how to shop and decorate,” added Tammy.
While not working at the store, Veronica’s full-time job is mother to 5-year-old daughter Kennedy and 2-year-old son Carter. She excitedly announced that she and her husband of six years Daniel (Tammy’s son) are expecting another child on April 14. “We know it’s a boy and we’ve decided to name him Dosson,” said Veronica.
The store has a multi-generational atmosphere. To illustrate, “On most days, you will see my children at the store in our play room or even helping shoppers bag their purchase,” explained Veronica.
“It has always been my dream, passion and my heart to have a place where I can serve (the customer) and use my creativity ability,” said Tammy.
When asked what they do with the unwanted donated items, Tammy replied, “We donate all of those items to area churches and charities, such as organizations that help the homeless. Our goal is to give back to the community,” she added.
“We feel blessed to have this great store in the (East County) community, initially in Lakeside and now in Santee,” both concurred.
They also offer special promotions. The next one, Sparkle and Save, will be on Friday, Feb. 8. “We will be open extended hours from 5 to 8 p.m.,and will be offering 50 percent discounts and 25 percent off coupons with purchase,” said Veronica.
Shoppers can also view store items on line, “As we post new items daily on our website,” said Veronica. Consignments are accepted during business hours, which are Tuesday, Thursday and Friday 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., Wednesday 10 a.m. to 7 p.m., Saturday 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., closed Sunday and Monday.
