35th Sycuan Powwow and Fashion Show

Sycuan Band of the Kumeyaay Nation is returning this year with its 35th Sycuan Powwow and third Fashion Show themed “The Fire Within,” allowing Native American artist to show the beauty, talent, and resilience of the Native American culture. Held on Sept. 5, the fashion show’s theme, inspired by the Kumeyaay greeting, “may the fire (your spirit) burn bright within you,” reflecting the enduring spirit of indigenous people. The fashion show featured 11 designers from Turtle Island, with their designs available for purchase.

The three-day powwow will showcase champion powwow dancers from across the United States, Canada, and Mexico, celebrating the beautiful dance style of indigenous people representing their tribes. Chairman Cody Martiniz will conduct an invocation before each grand entry. Arts and craft vendors will sell handmade authentic jewelry, pottery, basketry, and paintings. There will also be an abundance of food vendors.

The Powwow is located at 5469 Casino Way in El Cajon Sept. 6-8. On Friday Sept. 6 from 5-9 p.m., Saturday, Sept. 7 from 11 a.m. – 9 p.m., and on Sunday, Sept. 8 from 10 a.m. – 4:30 p.m., and is free to the public.
