LA MESA — Several young ladies and their mother’s took time off on Saturday, July 14 to make this town look just a little bit better.
Using the designs and inspiration of Madison Williams, 12, a student at Dale Elementary School, the group spent a sultry Saturday painting several SDG&E electrical boxes on University Avenue near Helix High School.
“Madison has always been artistic, but these designs are really wonderful,” gushed mother Kimberly.
Madison drew all of the pictures first with a pencil, while three other local young women painted and fleshed out the artwork with paints.
The designs ran the gamut from bright and breezy Disney cartoon characters to deep, dark and forboding cosmic picturegraphs.
“That’s just how I see things — sometimes,” she said of her more cerebreal latter work.
The project is a communal and artistic way of creating community identity, reducing graffiti and supporting local artists.
The work is inspired by the Utility Box Art Projects in such places as Mission Beach, Hillcrest, Solana Beach, Encinitas, and Ocean Beach and will hopefully help to beautify La Mesa..
The project would give individual local artists a chance to contribute to the East County’s unique image and culture.
