What’s new at the El Cajon Library

The annual Summer Reading program is in full swing on Douglas Avenue, and at all our 35 branches. Sign up quickly and easily on line www.sdcl.org/src to start logging in your reading to win prizes, and to be entered for the grand prize drawing. The El Cajon branch is also a designated Cool Zone – when it gets hot enough to fry an egg on the sidewalk, come on in to relax, enjoy the air conditioning, and use our resources, like free wi-fi, computers, the toys, books and puzzles in the Discovery Zone and engaging programs.

If you prefer to stay at home, you can check out e-books, downloadable audiobooks, and e-magazines, and sample our terrific databases, all accessible with your library card and PIN! Our library is available 24/7, one way or another.

In the summer, our wonderful youth services librarians, Kristin and Miko, arrange all kinds of different programs for kids, tweens and teens. Note the age limits for various programs, please. If no age range is indicated, all kids are welcome.

Special programs for youth and families in July:

Amazing Dana, the Magician, Tuesday, July 5 at 1 p.m. Yes, you too can experience magic at your library!

Paper Art, Thursday, July 7 at 1 p.m. Awesome art activity for tweens (ages 8-12).

Henna Tattoos, Thursday, July 7 at 3 p.m. Natasha Papousek from Crescent Moon Designs will be here (ages 12-18).

Cirque Quirk, Tuesday, July 12 at 1 p.m. Unique juggling performance, tailored for kids.

Let’s Paint, Thursday, July 14 at 1 p.m. Tweens (ages 8-12), unleash your inner creativity and go wild with paints.

DIY Comic-Con Cosplay with Belle Benson Plays Dress-up, Thursday, July 14 at 3 p.m. For ages 12-18: make your own cape and get ideas for awesome costumes.

Sparkles the Clown, Tuesday, July 19 at 1 p.m. A perennial favorite with the small crowd.

Teen Chef Contest, Thursday, July 21 at 3 p.m. Make your best dish with the secret ingredient for a chance to win! We provide all ingredients and equipment.

Luce Puppet Company, Tuesday, July 26 at 1 p.m. Who doesn’t love puppets?

Sculpture Challenge, Thursday, July 28 at 1 p.m. Another fantastic artistic pursuit for tweens (ages 8-12).

Butterbeer House Cup, Thursday, July 28 at 3 p.m. Teens (ages 12 – 18), get sorted into Hogwarts House Teams and create a butterbeer recipe to compete in the House Cup. Parents, don’t worry – it’s not really beer.

Through July 29:

Free Lunch for kids 18 & under, Monday through Friday at 11:30. Provided by the Cajon Valley School District. These lunches must be consumed on-site.

Rockin’ Recess, Monday through Friday at 12 p.m. Fun fitness activities outside after lunch.

Students for Students Crafternoon, Mondays and Thursdays at 1 pm. Story time and crafts by teen volunteers.

Read for the Win Crafternoon, Wednesdays at 1 p.m. A story and a craft for ages 4 and up.

Regular programs at the library for youth and families in July:

Books & Boogie Story Time, Wednesdays at 10 a.m. Stories, music and a craft for ages 2-5.

Dungeons & Dragons, Thursdays at 5 p.m. Friendly atmosphere, nice people, ages 12-19.

El Cajon Exploratorium, Saturdays at 1 p.m. Explore art and science through hands-on activities. For ages 4 and up.

Adults:

Please sign up for our annual Summer Reading Program at www.sdcl.org/src .You can keep your reading log online and collect your prizes (including free books) at the branch. Also, please note that we are a designated Cool Zone. Too hot at home? Come on down and enjoy the air conditioned comfort of the library while you peruse our extensive collection of periodicals, use the free wi-fi or computers, and/or attend one of the unique programs we’ve got planned for you this summer.

If you don’t want to leave home, use your library card and PIN to gain access to e-books, downloadable audiobooks, e-magazines and our array of databases. You could even learn one of sixty languages, through our Mango database, or brush up on your English with one of 16 ESL online courses.

Important new program! The Career Online High School is for adults who want to return to the education system and earn a high school diploma — free. Areas of study include childcare and education; security officer; office management; trucker/commercial driver; retail service and food service. Students are paired with an academic coach, and there are scholarships available for qualified adult learners. You must be at least 19 and a resident of East County. Winning Raw Food Recipes with Mimi Kirk, Saturday, July 9 at 2 pm. Raw food guru Mimi Kirk shares her knowledge and delicious samples.

Operation Frequent Wind, Tuesday, July 12 at 2 p.m. Navy veteran Rob Boyd recounts the story of this daring rescue of civilians from 1975 Saigon.

The Shirthouse Band, Saturday, July 16 at 2 p.m. Enjoy toe-tapping bluegrass music, sponsored by the Friends of the El Cajon Library.

Succeeding with Succulents, Thursday, July 21 at 2 p.m. Ed Gauss, expert gardener, is back with tips about these versatile plants.

Savvy Composting, Saturday, July 30 at 2 p.m. Learn the secrets of this environmentally friendly process with Rebecca Whelpley.

Special Summer Workout, Mondays in July at 6 p.m. Experience the healing power of belly dance with Nadirah.

Creative Crafters, Saturday, July 2 at 2 p.m. Special Fourth of July program – we provide the supplies, you bring the creativity!

Senior Mobile Technology Lab, Monday, July 11 from 12 – 2 pm. Adults 60+ are invited for individual instruction in email, social media, Skype and YouTube.

Legal Resource Help, Monday, July 18 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Assistance researching family, immigration, consumer, housing and business law.

Silver Sneakers Yoga, Mondays at 12:30 p.m. Safe moves and breathing exercises reduce stress and improve mental clarity.

 Child Support Services Outreach, Tuesday, July 19 from 1 – 6 p.m. The Department of Child Support Services answers questions, accepts new applications, reviews orders for modifications and negotiates stipulations.

Citizenship Class, Saturdays at 10 a.m. Learn about the application, examination and interview process.
