West Hills makes statement on wrestling mat

The West Hills High School wrestling team continues to dominate opponents in the 2018-19 season after recording a fourth-place finish in last weekend’s massive 46-team Holtville Rotary Tournament.

The Wolf Pack finished with 140 points — just one point out of third place.

West Hills finished the Jan. 25-26 duel in the desert with four place-winners: Saul Sanchez (first at 222 pounds), Norman Stone (fourth at 147), Jake Maheu (fourth at 172) and Eddie Marquis (fifth at 184).

Granite Hills High School finished fifth in the team standings with 114.5 points while Steele Canyon High School was seventh with 106 points. Valhalla High School was eighth with 104.5 points.

Rancho Bernardo High School captured the team title with 328 points. Olympian High School was second with 173 points, followed by Imperial High School in third place with 141 points.

Steele Canyon’s David Lipscomb won the 172-pound individual title while Granite Hills’ Jeremiah Satberry finished second in his 184-pound weight class to help highlight performances by East County wrestlers.

Lipscomb won a 1-0 decision over Rancho Bernardo’s Alex Florey in the championship round while Sanchez pinned Bonita Vista’s Michael Miller in 2:44.

Granite Hills’s other place-winners included Bailey Christian (fourth at 134) and Bryce Christian (fourth at 140).

Steele Canyon’s other place-winners included Ezra Cardenas (third at 134) and Logan Robinson (fourth at 108).

Valhalla’s place-winners included Matthew Jordan (fourth at 115), Adam Ruiz (fifth at 128), Manny Aramburo (fifth at 147) and Guadalupe Garcia (fifth at 154).

El Capitan, which finished in 26th place in the team standings with 39 points, had one place-winner: Cameron Horton (fourth at 162).

West Hills previously won the team championship at the Monte Vista Invitational held Jan. 12.

The Wolf Pack finished with 195 points to place ahead of runner-up Mira Mesa, which accumulated 156 points.

West Hills had three weight class champions: Stone (145), Maheu (170) and Sanchez (220).

Grossmont was third with 144 points while host Monte Vista was fifth with 134 points among the 27 scoring teams.

Steele Canyon finished seventh with 125 points while Mount Miguel was 10th with 79 points.

East County wrestlers otherwise dominated the tournament.

Weight class champions included Steele Canyon’s Logan Robinson (106), Mount Miguel’s Raul Garcia (120), Grossmont’s Sebastian Coats (126), El Cajon Valley’s Yama Safiullah (152) and Monte Vista’s Blake Schmidt (285).
