San Diego State University senior specialist Jack Browning (Lakeside/West Hills/Grossmont College) earned honors as the Mountain West Special Teams Player of the Week in the wake of the Aztecs’ 41-34 win at Hawaii on Oct. 14. It is the second weekly conference honor for the defending MW Special Teams Player of the Year and the fourth of his career.
Browning accounted for 11 points (five PAT conversions and two field goals) in a seven-point over the Rainbow Warriors while excelling in all three kicking duties.
Browning punted four times for a 56.0 average and 54.2 net average, both career highs. The 56.0 average is the highest in the country this year by a FBS player.
Out of his four punts, three were for at least 50 yards and two went for 60-plus yards, including a careerlong 66-yarder and a career-long-tying 63-yarder earlier in the game. Three of Browning’s four punts landed inside the 20-yard line (and 10-yard line) with Hawaii’s average starting position of those three punts at its own 5.3-yard line (8, 1 and 7). His other punt was muffed by a Rainbow Warrior returner and SDSU recovered it.
Browning also kicked off eight times with a 64.9 kickoff average and six touchbacks to play a big part in SDSU dominating the average starting field position against Hawaii (SDSU 42 to Hawaii 23).
On the season, Browning is averaging 45.44 yards per punt and has made 10 of his 15 field goal attempts (0.667). Browning is tied for the FBS lead in PAT percentage (17-for-17, 100.00). He leads SDSU in season scoring with 47 points.
For his career, Browning ranks first at SDSU in punt average (45.9), fourth in field goal percentage (.750, minimum 25 attempts) and eighth in made field goals (30).
