Victorian Roses Ladies Riding Society’s Wild West Casino Night a fundraiser for horse rescues

Saturday night, there were no “yeehaw” screams and horseshoes flying on the dusty ground at the Lakeside Rodeo, but one could hear the clink of glasses, the dices at play as chips hit the gambling tables along with the rustling of the long fluffy brocade dresses on the waxed floors. This was the fifth edition of the Wild West Casino Nights organized by the Victorian Roses Ladies Riding Society, a charitable organization that participates in events throughout the year. This fundraiser was to raise money for other local horse rescue groups.

Dressed up to reconstitute the golden times of the 1800’s era, the guests looked mighty fine in their gentlemen’s dandy outfits, recalling the American Civil War times filled with carpetbaggers and saloon girls, cowboys and the Spanish rancher outfits, also known as vaquero suits. The ladies of the Victorian Roses took the prize at being the most historical accurate, wearing one of a kind, silky, flamboyant dresses they make themselves to teach people about the historical times of the 1880’s.

Wild West Casino nights is only one of the events organized throughout the years to raise funds for horse rescue efforts. The lovely ladies were chosen to participate in the Rose Parade for the fourth time this year, riding old carriages, horses and side saddling at the Del Mar race, giving performances for educational purposes at the rodeo shows and organizing fashion shows in the winter to teach people about the old costume styles.

“My saddle is 120 years old,” said Dyan Paquette, a co-founder of this eight-year-old organization. She also sews her own dresses. The access into the Victorian Roses society is invite only and counts about 20 members so far throughout San Diego County. These ladies know how to dance the cotillion too.

Paquette came up with the idea of organizing the casino nights after going to a casino themed birthday party many years ago and right now this event is becoming very successful at raising awareness and fund for horse rescue organizations. Susan Lord, volunteer for the Horses of Tir Na Nog, one of the local organizations benefiting from this event, points out that more people should be aware of the existence of these shelters for horses.

“We are their only option, because we take in horses that are not adoptable. Nobody wants them. We offer them a forever home,” she said.

Another horse sanctuary for non-ridable horses, Star Bright Ranch, led by Becca and Chad Campbell of Ramona, was among the beneficiaries of this fundraising event.

“We host horses that either through injuries or old age they not longer become ridable for their owners, but still have quality of life and we offer them a pasture environment where they can just retire with dignity without being euthanized,” said Becca Campbell.

Niki Branch, the President of the Falcon Ridge from Valley Center, takes care of horses coming from the San Diego Animal Control cases and from individual owners who give up their horses. Her organization takes in the animals, rehabilitate them and then adopt them out with a 100 percent annual success rate. Branch has been doing this for the past 15 years. She dreamed of saving horses since she was a teenager when she used to ride them, but one day, after she watched a documentary about slaughter horses on “Animal Planet,” she decided to dedicate her life to save horses.

The whole evening was a huge success and a welcoming event for the locals of Lakeside, well-known country ground for horse people who love to spend a night recreating the golden days of the past atmosphere, while helping noble causes.
